ISO son las siglas en inglés para International Organization for Standardization. Se trata de la Organización Internacional de Normalización o Estandarización, y se dedica a la creación de normas o estándares para asegurar la calidad, seguridad y eficiencia de productos y servicios.
Este organismo actualmente está presente en 193 países y es una organización no gubernamental e independiente. En este momento hay redactadas más de 22.000 normas ISO que abarcan todas las industrias, desde tecnología y seguridad alimentaria, hasta agricultura y salud.
Una de las normas ISO más conocidas y con mayor prestigio en el mundo es la 14001, que se otorga a las empresas que demuestran ante un organismo evaluador que poseen un sistema productivo enfocado en la reducción del impacto que genera su actividad productiva en el medio ambiente, lo cual posee también beneficios internos para la organización al mejorar el uso de los recursos.
La importancia que posee las normas ISO en la sociedad radica en que los productos que fabrican las empresas con este sello poseen unos estándares de calidad, seguridad, fiabilidad y sostenibilidad por encima de la media.
La norma ISO tiene su origen en la cubre que realizó Naciones Unidas en Río de Janeiro (Brasil) en 1992, y su publicación comenzó a partir de 1996.
